Fight Sugar Cravings with Dates – Nature’s Caramel

People have been eating them since the beginning of time.  Dates are great eaten by themselves, added to deserts, smoothies or used to make power bars. They are a great source of carbohydrates so they provide the body with needed energy.  They are one of nature’s sweetest fruits and taste very close to caramel.  When dates are eaten cold, they even chew like a soft caramel. 

If you are trying to “kick sugar”, dates are an excellent alternative to sugary snacks. When I was removing sugar from my diet, I ate dates as an alternative.  During that time I would eat 8 or 10 dates at a time.  That is a lot of dates!  I’m not recommending you eat that many.  Certainly not on a regular basis but during this period of time where sugar cravings are intense, this is a much healthier alternative.  Just eat until you are satisfied. Now that I “kicked sugar”, 2 or 3 dates are plenty to satisfy my sweet tooth.
I store my dates on the counter for a few weeks until they start to look like they are “getting tired” and then I put them in a jar in the fridge and store them for several more weeks.
Dates have a small pit inside.  To remove it, pull the date apart to expose the small pit and discard.
The best place that I have found to buy dates is either at Sam’s Club or Costco.  Surprisingly, I like Sam’s quality better than Costco and you can find them in the produce section in a plastic container.
